Popups or popups are those windows that appear automatically without the user having requested them. Their content is usually of an advertising nature, and they do not have a fixed size, although they typically do not occupy the entire screen.
Although they are being used less and less, mainly due to the blocking systems and restrictions that enable the browsers themselves, it is convenient to know precisely the protection system that we have before these new elements that most of the time are involuntary for the user.
Regarding their presentation, although the general name of pop-up windows is used, they can be:
Emerging: They appear in the foreground overlapping the active window. Its content is usually mainly advertising, and its use is very abusive.
Submerged: In this case, they appear under the main window and can be quite more dangerous than the new ones, since the advertising function does not seem to fit this form of presentation, and in some cases, they can carry hidden codes destined to write cookies or other features of control.
From the Tools option, both in the menu bar and in the toolbar or commands, you can access the Pop-up Blocker option that will allow you the binary choice of:
Disable the pop-up blocker, which will enable you to disable protection and allow all pages to open pop-ups.
A configuration of the pop-up blocker allows us to open that option in a new window where we can add or remove permissions to website addresses to show pop-ups. We can also configure you to notify us with a sound each time you try to open a new pop-up window, as well as with a notice in the information bar. We can also establish three blocking levels according to the permissiveness we want to have: Low, Medium and High.
We have already verified that there are many ways to reach the different options and possibilities that our Internet Explorer browser provides, now it is about knowing them and that you choose the one that best suits you at all times. Well, we can also access the same options previously seen from the menu option Tools > Internet Options > Privacy tab.
When we access a page that opens a pop-up window that is not requested by us, the browser will show us a sound and a warning in the information bar (under the control of tabs and the toolbar or commands).
If that window or blocked pop-up were not to our liking, we could close the warning by clicking on Close, and the window would not open.
Since some services use this system of pop-ups for its operation, it can happen that we are not interested in the blockage occurring. In this case, it is enough to click with the right mouse button on the warning of the blocked pop-up element to open a menu that allows us new options.
We can make the decision to allow the temporary elements to be temporarily or always allowed from this site. In the case of deciding to let it, it will still be for all the pop-up windows of that specific place, and the browser will ask for confirmation to automatically add it to the list of allowed sites that we have seen previously.
The same menu of the warning of the blocked pop-up allows us to access the Configuration option to deactivate the blocker or show or hide the information bar. The choice of More configurations … opens us again the window of Configuration of the blocker of new elements that we commented previously.
If a page or website has permission to activate pop-ups temporarily, in the information bar, we will see the following warning message if we want to change it to the permanent agreement.
